Directed marvellously by James Cameron, the second instalment of Avatar is far better when it comes to technicality, characterisation, and playing with complex emotions that are not only human. However, with a runtime of more than three hours, it could've been a director's cut than a theatrical one, as it is less exciting than the first part, which is sort of a great benchmark to satisfy.
Gold (Malayalam) – an experimental visual narrative that focuses on today’s consumeristic culture
Having previously directed Neram and Premam, Alphonse Puthren decided to gamble with his editorial techniques in this multi-starrer that focuses on how products are consumed in today's society. Backed up by a splendid score from Rajesh Murugesan, this experimental surprisingly worked for me, despite certain shortcomings. However, it may not be everyone's cup of tea, especially if it's a filled one!
Kantara (Kannada) – a well-written and well-executed mass entertainer that is all about co-existence
Directed by Rishab Shetty, Kantara follows a folklore deeply rooted in mythology, emphasizing the need for co-existence between humans and nature. Backed up by detailed production design and a powerful score from Ajaneesh Loknath, Kantara surprised me with its commercial execution of a well-known plot of land, greed, and power. But at the same time, it disappointed me with its conservative depiction of misogyny.
Love Today (2022) – a well-written humour-love drama that proves essential for the tik-tok generation
Adapted from his short film "App(a) lock", Pradeep Ranganathan manages to pull off something that is socially relevant, despite all the insta-reels that the movie thrives on. With some notable performances and a more than bankable score from Yuvan Shankar Raja, Love Today showcases the reality of love in today's world, with humour sprinkled at the right places.
Sardar (Tamil) – an ambitious spy thriller with a brilliant screenplay that hits the right spot.
Despite being hampered by commercial roadblocks, Sardar still succeeds in carrying out such a mammoth project, thanks to the brilliance in the screenplay by P. S. Mithran. Backed up by some scintillating background score from G V Prakash Kumar, this Karthi starrer has much more to offer than just being any other spy thrillers out there.
